PLACEMAKING
The Y Centre is a pavilion glowing through a screen of vegetation.
Located in an economically depressed neighborhood, the building becomes a beacon in the urban landscape. At night, the signature lighting and large glazed openings invite the community to take part in civic and athletic activities. By day, the white concrete block facade is a festive marker on a park-like site.

Shanghai, August 31, 2010 – The will to develop cities that are at the same time inclusive, creative and sustainable is above all the quest for an ideal, an immense societal project that must be ceaselessly nourished and renewed through the efforts of the greater Canadian community nationwide. It is this large-scale and, at the same time, thoroughly human project that seemed to represent for us the fundamental element of our identity, the centre around which the architectural concept and experience of the pavilion should gravitate.

Montreal, August 18, 2010 – Built on a mountainside with incredible views of Mont Tremblant, the Thibault residence questions the obvious nostalgia of traditional architecture imbedded within most of the large residential developments built in natural areas and intended for tourists or for secondary residences for city dwellers.

Montréal, le 16 août 2010 – La maison est à Montréal, dans le quartier du Plateau-Mont-Royal. Elle devait être agrandie et transformée pour une famille de quatre. Deux pièces devaient être ajoutées, une pour les parents et une pour les enfants. La maison devait aussi être repensée afin d’en faire un projet cohérent et unifié dans son esprit, sa forme et sa matérialité. Nous voulions créer une maison lumineuse, apaisante, qui respire et qui est pensée en fonction de tous les gestes du quotidien. Le premier défi consistait à établir la volumétrie de l’intervention. Le lot, de forme atypique pour le quartier, se trouve dans un îlot dense et sans ruelle. Il fallait donc arriver à agrandir la maison malgré la réglementation contraignante, tout en préservant la qualité du jardin et aussi trouver une façon d ‘amener de la lumière naturelle à l’intérieur alors qu’à l’origine, les façades de la maison pouvant recevoir des fenêtres étaient principalement nord-est.

Montreal, August 16, 2010 – The house is in Montréal, on a densely built block in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood. An extension and a transformation of the house had to be made to allow for a family of four. Two rooms had to be added, one for the kids and one for the adults. The house also had to be rethought to make it a coherent project in its spirit and materiality. We wanted to create a house filled with natural light, appeasing, and thought with the day-to-day life in mind. So we had to extend the house and preserve the quality of the garden while working around the various zoning bylaws. The original house orientation was also a challenge since the façades that could receive windows were mainly oriented Northeast, therefore letting in little direct natural light.

Celle-ci, née de l’union de CDID DESIGN à la firme internationale d’architecture, se traduira en une structure autonome spécialisée en aménagement intérieur qui viendra compléter les services en architecture de la divison montréalaise d'ARCOP. La fondatrice de CDID DESIGN, Pascale Vaillancourt, l'une des rares designers d'intérieur à compter plus de 25 ans d'expérience dans le domaine de l'hôtellerie et de la restauration, devient la présidente de CDID-ARCOP. CDID DESIGN continuera, de son côté, à offrir les mêmes services d'aménagement intérieur.

This amalgamation of the international architectural firm and the interior design firm is taking the form of an autonomous structure specializing in interior design that will complement the architectural services of ARCOP’s Montreal division. The founder of CDID DESIGN, Pascale Vaillancourt, a rare interior designer with more than 25 years of experience in the hotel and restaurant sector, is the new president of CDID-ARCOP. At the same time, CDID DESIGN will continue to offer its usual interior design services.

Montréal, le 6 juillet 2010 – L’Opéra-palette consiste en la transformation d’un objet banal et anonyme, la palette de manutention, en un espace opératique. La palette est divertie de son usage principal pour devenir à la fois une composante architecturale, structurale et scénographique concourant à la matérialisation d’un opéra total. L’Opéra-palette sera une nouvelle construction temporaire, un lieu de performance en plein-air, qui marque le curieux voyage d’une palette, de l’usine à la scène à l’usine. Le projet sera érigé dans la cour du conservatoire de musique, à l’occasion du premier Festival International d’Opéra de Québec en juillet 2011. Après avoir été sélectionné par l’APASQ pour représenter le Canada à la sélection finale de projets d’architecture, le projet de l’Opéra-palette a été invité par la conservatrice de l’exposition NOW and NEXT, Dorit Hannah, à faire partie de l’exposition des meilleurs projets nationaux.

Montreal, July 6, 2010 – The transformation of a banal, ubiquitous object—the shipping pallet—into a space for opera. The pallet is envisioned as a total architectural artefact, serving as building material, structural system and stage set. Its use for this temporary, open-air performance space is a kind of journey: from factory to stage and back. The project is located in Quebec City, in a courtyard of the Conservatoire. It will be built in July 2011 for the Quebec International Opera Festival.

México, 06 de julio 2010 – Santa María es un proyecto situado en el centro histórico de Valle de Bravo, una pequeña ciudad colonial que data de 1530, que se encuentra a dos horas de la Ciudad de México. Esta ciudad cuenta con un contexto físico fuerte y se encuentra en las afueras de un lago artificial. Nuestro terreno está ubicado a cien metros de la iglesia de Santa María Ahuacatlán, una iglesia colonial que data del siglo XVI.

Mexico City, July 6, 2010 – Santa Maria is a housing development located in a historic protected site in the heart of Valle de Bravo, a small colonial city dating from 1530, which is 2 hours away from Mexico City. This historic town has a strong physical context and is found in the outskirts of a man-made lake. Our site is located a hundred yards from the church of Santa Maria Ahuacatlan, a colonial church that dates back to the XVI century.

Athens, June 23, 2010 – This project is about a 3 storey house (650 sq. m) built in the 70’s in the north suburbs, that needed to be totally revised in order to house a couple with their 3 children and a significant contemporary art collection. The house situated on a very sloping site possessed a conscious distinctive 70’s Athenian typical villa style usually found in the suburbs.

Présentation au concours pour un nouveau planétarium à Montréal
Montréal, le 31 mai 2010 – Le projet s’inspire d’abord des données contextuelles du site. À travers le réseau complexe d’axes composant les structures en place, le planétarium s’insère en ton sur ton dans l’univers blanc des installations olympiques. Seulement au lieu d’être opaque et mat comme le béton qui forme le stade olympique et l’ancien vélodrome, le planétarium est, par contraste, légèrement translucide et laiteux ; Il laisse la couleur l’envahir et le teinter de l’intérieur ; Il multiplie les surfaces polies et réfléchissantes comme le verre opalescent, l’acier inoxydable, l’aluminium blanc lustré, le panneau d’aluminium perforé blanc et le verre céramifié. Ce n’est qu’une fois à l’intérieur de ces volumes que la volumétrie du bâtiment, l’articulation des espaces et les Théâtres des étoiles - prévus pour être recouverts d’aluminium couleur laiton dépoli et perforé - commenceront à offrir une vision claire de l’objet du musée.

Entry for the competition for a new planetarium in Montreal
Montreal, May 31, 2010 – The project takes its first inspiration in the very particular artificial site in which it is set. Through the complex network of existing structures, the planetarium blends into the white universe of the Olympic installations. In contrast to the opaque and matt concrete used for the Olympic stadium and for the cycling installations, the planetarium is translucent and milky. With human activity, the interior will be invaded by colors and the many polished and reflective surfaces like opalescent glass, stainless steel, lacquered white aluminium, white perforated aluminium and frit glass will contribute to amplify this effect. Once inside, articulated volumes and spaces will reveal the object of the museum: the Star theatres, covered in perforated brass panels.

Montréal, 31 mai 2010 – À l’aube de ce nouveau millénaire, les spas semblent occuper une place de plus en plus en importante à coté des parcs d’attraction traditionnels de Coney Island ou de l’île Ste-Hélène ou le corps humain au lieu d’être chahuté, étourdi et soumis à des sensations fortes, est plutôt massé, cajolé et traité aux petits oignons pour son propre bien-être. Quelques sensations fortes demeurent toutefois lors du passage d’une expérience de chaleur intense à un bain glacial. Le paradis perdu semble de plus en plus proche, cette fois sur l’île des sœurs.

Instead of being toppled around or facing sensational thrills, the body is massaged and taken care of for its own well being. Montreal, May 31, 2010 – Built in 1968, the original secondary school depicts a typical expression of the modern architecture of that time: a six-story curtain wall structure sitting on a one story concrete base. Both in terms of height and material language, the building stands out within its residential surrounding of three story brick-clad row houses. The project mandate to re-program the interiors to accommodate the Conservatory created an opportunity to resolve certain problematic building elements including lack of natural light, chaotic internal circulation, and poor urban integration.
