Parrainé par M. André Lavallée, responsable de l’aménagement urbain et du transport collectif au comité exécutif de la Ville de Montréal, ce concours d’idées en une étape et ouvert à tous, s’inscrit dans le plan lumière du Quartier des spectacles à Montréal. Il propose une réflexion collective sur l’enjeu identitaire d’un édifice patrimonial remarquable par la mise en valeur de sa façade. Il s’agit d’un édifice qui diffuse depuis 15 ans des activités pluridisciplinaires incluant un volet propre à la création et à l’art contemporain.

En effet, le Gesù a été reconnu bien culturel en 1975 et depuis, il continue de multiplier des activités qui contribuent au développement de la culture montréalaise. Il est un lieu d’art et d’histoire, de spectacle et de conférence, d’exposition d’art contemporain, de recherche et création en danse et de rencontre interculturelle, le tout vivant en parallèle à un lieu de culte. La complexité de son programme en fait un centre de créativité atypique.

Ce concours cherche à mettre en valeur le caractère unique de son architecture et la particularité de sa mission qui tente de jeter des ponts entre l’art, l’humain et le spirituel. L’éclairage devra permettre de révéler cette spécificité.

Le jury, composé de Ruedi Baur (Intégral Ruedi Baur), Eric Gauthier (Les architectes FABG), Jacques Lachapelle (Université de Montréal), Alexandre Colombani (dg Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI)), Louis Brillant (arhitecte), Ginette Noiseux (dg Espace Go) et Daniel LeBlond (Provincial des jésuites), aura le mandat d’évaluer les projets soumis au concours selon des critères correspondants : 1 – au caractère original de la proposition d’éclairage en regard du mandat de création d’un Centre de créativité contemporain, 2 – à sa participation innovatrice au plan lumière du Quartier des Spectacles (développé par le Partenariat), 3 – à sa capacité de mettre en valeur un élément fort du patrimoine religieux montréalais.

Ce dernier formulera son jugement et retiendra trois propositions récompensées comme suit : 10 000 $ au 1er prix, 5 000 $ au 2ème prix, 3 000 $ au 3ème prix.

Le public sera aussi invité à être un acteur privilégié de ce projet en votant pour sa proposition favorite. À cet effet, l’ensemble des projets sera exposé au Gesù du 20 janvier à tard dans la nuit du 28 février 2009, date de la Nuit blanche à Montréal dans le cadre de la 10e édition du Festival MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE. Le prix du public sera assorti d’une bourse de 2 000 $.

La date limite pour la réception des dossiers est le mercredi 14 janvier 2009 à 17h. Aucun frais de participation n’est exigé. The comptetition is sponsored by Mr. André Lavallée, who handles urban planning and development and public transport for the City of Montreal Executive Committee. This ideas competition will consist of a single round of judging, is open to all and is part of the Lighting Plan for Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles. The competition will be a collective reflection on the challenges of expressing the identity of a remarkable heritage building through the enhancement of its façade. For fifteen years, this building has been a centre for multidisciplinary cultural activities, including a program that supports the creation of contemporary art.

The Gesù was recognized as a cultural asset in 1975 and has since continued to extend its activities, which contribute to the development of Montreal’s culture. It is a place of art and history, of performances and conferences, of the exposition of contemporary art, of research and creation in dance and intercultural relations – all alongside its life as a religious site. The complexity of its program makes it an atypical creative centre. This competition seeks to highlight the unique architectural character of the Gesù, as well as its particular mission to build bridges between the artistic, the human and the spiritual. The illumination of the building must reveal these specific aspects.

The jury is composed of Ruedi Baur (Intégral Ruedi Baur), Eric Gauthier (Les architectes FABG), Jacques Lachapelle (Université de Montréal), Alexandre Colombani (executive director of Lighting Urban Community International [LUCI]), Louis Brillant (architect), Ginette Noiseux (executive director of Espace Go) and Daniel LeBlond (Jesuit Provincial). The jury’s mandate is to evaluate the propositions submitted to the competition in keeping with the following criteria: 1) The originality of the lighting submission in relation to the mandate of a contemporary creative centre; 2) The submission’s innovative participation in the Quartier des spectacles Lighting Plan (developed by the Partnership); 3) The submission’s ability to enhance a major component of Montreal’s religious heritage.

The jury will judge all the submissions and award prizes to three entries: first prize ($10,000), second prize, ($5,000) and third prize ($3,000).

Members of the public will also be invited to play an important role in the comptetiton, by voting for their favorite proposal. All entries will be exhibited at the Gesù, from January 20 to late in the night of February 28, 2009, the day of the Montreal All-Nighter held as part of the 10th anniversary of the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS FESTIVAL. The winner of the public’s choice prize will be awarded $2,000.

The deadline for receiving submissions is Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at 5 PM. There is no charge for making a submission. Competition rules and documents are available at www.quartierdesspectacles.com/gesu. The comptetition winners will be announced in March 2009.
